Got A Sharpie?... You Can Make A Cool T-Shirt!

If you are looking for a creative way to design a cool t-shirt, then look no further. All that is required are a few basic household items and a creative mind.

Materials needed:

  • Sharpies
  • T-Shirt (white or gray work best)
  • Plastic party cups
  • Rubber bands
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Spray bottle

First pour the rubbing alcohol into the spray bottle. Second, unless you want your carpet/floor smelling like rubbing alcohol, lay down some newspaper or plastic coverings. Now let's get started...

  1. Lay your t-shirt out on a nice, flat surface.
  2. Take one plastic cup and place it inside the t-shirt with the open end facing up.
  3. Rubber band your cup to the t-shirt.
  4. Make a design/write on the area of t-shirt covered by the cup.
  5. Spray rubbing alcohol onto your design and watch the colors spread.
  6. Move your cup to different area of the t-shirt and begin again! (using multiple cups at once makes your creation go faster)

This is a simple way to make a cool t-shirt. It looks similar to tye dying but without the mess. It is also easier and less messy then using paint. This is a great idea to try in a art classroom, birthday party, on game day, or just at home.

There are a few things to beware of... one is to make sure you do not spray the rubbing alcohol on a wooden surface. (I ruined my coffee table this way) You also might want to turn on the fan or open a few windows after spraying the rubbing alcohol due to the smell. Lastly be careful when removing the plastic cups from under your t-shirt, for they sometimes collect rubbing alcohol inside them.
